Anna means food and Dhanam means offering or gift. In order to survive, all need food and to give food to someone as an offering is considered as an unmatched and ultimate form of charity. The veda verses signifying this fact goes on like this, “Annadanam Samam Danam Trilokeshu Na Vidhathe”.
Almost all Upanishads and holy books encourage providing free food for the hungry as Anna dhanam is said to increase divinity, brain sharpness and body strength to both the receiver and the donor. Saivism in particular goes a step further and see god (lord Shiva) in the soul of the hungry person. Hence preaches all Saivaits to not only feed food but also treat the hungry person as if they were to treat Lord Shiva.
We at 1008 Shivas, offer Anna Dhanam to all irrespective caste, creed, religion, gender and class, as we consider everyone equal at the feet of God. Though it is matter of hard work, investment, effort and dedication, we see to that no one stays or goes hungry.
